Anatomy of a Pit Stop > Page 3
The Fuel Man wears a three layer fire suit for protection. When the Champ Car pulls into the pit area, he fits the fuel nozzle into the opening for the fuel tank on the inboard side of the Champ Car.

This crew member is not part of the 'over the wall' crew. He keeps the fuel hose level to ensure the quickest fuel flow.

After the fuel hose is removed from the Champ Car, the fire extinguisher sprays the fuel port on the car to wash away any spillage. This is important because the methanol fuel used in Champ Cars burns an invisible flame. If a fuel fire broke out on the car, no one would be able to see it.

This crew member stays behind the wall and holds the Lollipop (or ""stop sign"") over the wall so the driver knows where to bring his car to a full stop. He may also be on the ready with a manual jack for the front of the car in case of an air jack failure.
